This post is to share with other people who might be interested in building a roof for their boat themselves.

We built (are building) a new roof for our sailboat ZwerfCat. It's a Fountaine Pajot Bahia, 46ft from 2002.

The photos show the process with us starting to build a wooden structure onto which we built the roof.

The material for the roof itself consists of glasfibers/epoxy and the black is carbon fibers/epoxy and recycled foam as the core. We used carbon as a stiff material everywhere where needed.

The ribs are made from foam+carbon. The outer vertical edge is also made from foam and carbon.

We love solar power so even though we already had quite a lot, we wanted 3 extra panels. To reduce the weight of the roof, we chose to make the 3 big solar panels part of the roof, they are embedded into the roof. To prevent leaks, we made a vertical edge all inside the panels, the water is drained away.

We wanted to have good visibility, thus chose a big window of acrylic sheet. We will build acrylic sheets in front which can be opened or closed depending on the weather.

The result is very strong and lightweight and we're happy with it. We still have to finish it but at least it's functional now. Sailed quite a lot with it already, in high winds as well and there aren't any issues with strength or noise or whatsoever.
